Description

This version is Release Candidate One of the code base for the Baarns Developer Jump Start, (BDJS™) Standard Edition. This is a limited subset of the code base used by Baarns Consulting to create custom Access solutions. This version it meant to show proof of concept and to generate feedback from the user community.

The Baarns Developer Jump Start is an Add-in Library which functions as a wizard. It is designed to walk the user through the process of splitting an existing database and then building the foundation for the development phase. The wizard will walk the user through the following steps:

Splitting the database so that tables (the data) will be located in a separate database file (back-end). This has become a standard practice when developing in Microsoft Access. One of the chief benefits is that the data is always separate from the main application (forms and code), allowing for maintenance while maintaining the safeguards and accessibility of the data for other clients.
Defining the "Properties" the application. This gives the user the opportunity to create a name for the application, have the application represented by a custom icon. It also determines whether the database window, status bar and built-in toolbars will be accessible to the general user.
Specifying forms to display on startup of application. The user is given the opportunity to select forms that he/she has currently developed and have them open when the application is started.
Create "Splash Screen." Users can design a form that will be opened on startup for a specified period of time. Splash screens are normally used to display a logo, credits or copyright info. The user may specify the amount of time to display the splash screen, color of and size of the screen. The user may then select a picture to display in the screen and then size and position it.
Insert Code Modules. When finished the wizard will insert modules in the modified application. The modules contain all the startup code necessary for the application and represent the use of structure and naming conventions in the course of development.

Purpose

Our purpose is to create a 'Jump Start' or foundation that will handle 90% of the standard issues that reoccur in custom development. This system is designed to properly balance the need for structure with the need for accessibility. Additionally, it provides excellent quality, real world, battle tested code. By design, we do not attempt to address every issue that occurs in development, only the most common. The Professional Edition (due in the first quarter of '97) will include more code for more targeted, higher end scenarios. It will also contain an additional "Code Library." The Code Library will contain procedures that the user can copy to an existing applications. It will also allow users to store their own code and modules to use later in other applications. In addition, the library will also serve as a repository for Class Modules.
