Charts

Below are several Frequently Asked Questions and answers on the subject of using Charts in Excel.

How do I copy a chart to another workbook without bringing the data along?

How do I make a multiple series XY Chart with different x-axis data for each data set?

I want to copy a chart to another workbook but I don't want to bring the data along. Is there some way to decouple the chart from the underlying data so I don't create links when I copy the chart?

This is actually very easy to do. Simply activate the chart in question, by selecting its sheet tab if it's a chart sheet or double clicking it if it's an embedded chart. Then select each data series in the chart, place your cursor in the formula bar and press the F9 key. This will turn the SERIES equations for each data series into hard-coded data. You can then copy the chart anywhere you like and you will not create links to the original workbook.

The easiest way to do this is to create the XY chart using one set of data, then copy and paste the other data sets into the chart. You do it in the following manner:

  1. Create the chart with your first data set.
  2. Highlight the two columns of data set 2 with your mouse and choose Edit   - Copy from the menu.
  3. Activate the chart and choose Edit - Paste Special from the menu. The Paste Special dialog will appear.
  4. In the Paste Special dialog choose Add Cells as New Series and mark the check box labeled Categories (X Values) in First Column. Then click Ok.
  5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for each additional data set.
