Word 97Ease of Use
Proofreading
Smarter Spelling
The linguistic research team gathered custom dictionaries from
thousands of users to identify frequently used words that would
be useful additions to the built in dictionary. As a result, Word
has added thousands of new words and the spelling tools have
evolved dramatically on two major fronts: 1) expansion of our
built in dictionary to reflect common word usage, 2) increased
sophistication of our typing recognition technology. Examples of
word types that have been added are:
- Personal names of varying ethnicity such as Ahmed, Jose
and commonly used company names from the Fortune 1000
list.
- All country names and names of US cities with a
population of 30,000 or more.
- Current terminology - words that describe new industry
and economic conditions like reengineering, downsizing.
- Computer related terms such as file name extensions,
product names, technologies.
And, we are smarter about recognizing your typing patterns and
not marking errors in your document:
- Words in uppercase and words containing numbers no longer
get marked as misspellings.
- Word recognizes common word patterns such as URLs
for example http://www.microsoft.com, UNCs
for example \\server\sharename, and email
addresses such as username@corporation.com.
- Word recognizes every word from your user name and your
organizations name and never flags them as
misspellings in your documents.
