Word has always had horizontal cell merge, and now Word lets you merge cells vertically as well. Select two cells in a column and merge them easily through the Merge cells toolbar button. Or you can just erase the cell divisions that are in the way using the Eraser tool.

Word now lets you align your cell contents either at the top, center or the bottom of the cell using the convenient Alignment toolbar buttons. And, if your text is oriented vertically (see Vertical Text Direction below), the buttons automatically adjust to give you left, center and right alignment.
