Bullets and Numbering

Word 97 has revamped its list and numbering engine to address user needs ranging from simple numbered and bulleted lists to powerful, multiple level lists that are common in legal documents. Microsoft has automated the simple list creation process in Word 7.0 but there were some restrictions on your document’s structure to get the benefits of automatic list creation. Word has lifted all these restrictions to give you full flexibility on the placement of list items in your document. And they now give you all the functionality necessary to create incredibly customized and powerful multiple level or outline style lists:

• One place to change all numbering - Word now has one central place to initiate or modify any bulleted or numbered list scheme, the new Bullets and Numbering dialog. We have integrated what used to be Heading Numbering into this dialog so you have single and multiple level list functionality accessible in one place.

• Easily start, continue and end a list - just like Word 7.0, typing a number followed by text automatically creates a numbered list with hanging indents. Now when you press enter, or create a new paragraph, Word automatically continues your list. A backspace at the beginning of a numbered or bulleted paragraph automatically turns off the numbering or bulleting.
• Smart enough to know what you want next, yet flexible enough so that you can change, end or restart the sequence easily - Word is smart about guessing when a list is a continuation of a previous list or a new one. Word automatically scans back to find the last numbered paragraph so it can continue the sequence. If you don’t want continuous numbering, you can easily override the sequence by backspacing and typing a new number, or choosing to Restart Numbering in the Bullets and Numbering dialog. And, lists can now continue anywhere in the document - you can have an automatic list with a table or non-indented paragraph or page break in between any of your list elements.
