Word unifies the concept of textual, print oriented, cross-references with the online hyperlinks. A new checkbox in the Insert Cross-Reference dialog attaches a hyperlink to cross-references being inserted. Instead of scrolling through the document to find the referenced text, now you just click on the cross-reference and use the web navigational toolbar to get back and forth between related paragraphs.

Word now automatically compresses pictures or graphics inserted in documents. This means that even with lots of graphics in your document, your file size stays small. Word now natively stores JPEG images and converts all raster formats to PNG, a new compressed format.
