Navigation Tools

Usability tests showed us that users are very comfortable navigating through their documents using the scrollbar. However, using the scrollbar to review specific document elements quickly was not optimal in long and structured documents, and users would either page through the entire document, or occasionally use the Find and Go To dialogs. In Word 97, we combined the intuitive navigation of the scrollbar with the power of the Find and Go To dialogs. We have implemented a document Browser accessible right from the scrollbar and have also added intelligent Browse Previous and Browse Next buttons to facilitate navigation. The browser lets you choose an element to navigate by – for example, if you need to review all the tables or pictures in a document, you click on the table button in the browser. Now, when you click on the previous or next buttons, Word automatically takes you to the previous or next table in the document, tremendously speeding up your navigation. You can browse your document by any of these elements:
