Word automatically hides plain text prefix formatting often found in threaded messages and replaces it with coloration and indents. For example, ">>" is often used as a prefix to indicate an "original" message. When a WordMail user receives a message containing these types of embedded prefixes, Word hides that formatting and instead, displays the hierarchy by varying the indentation and coloration of each message. The indentation and coloration is proportional to the number of prefixes.

Plain text message with >> prefixes to indicate response hierarchy

AutoFormatted message with indentation and coloration to distinguish response hierarchy
If you get mail from users on a different language mail systems you sometimes get "garbage" inserted in the message e.g. lots of "=" signs followed by numbers. This occurs when the senders mail system failed to map extended characters correctly. WordMail automatically scans your incoming messages for extended characters that are not mapped correctly to ASCII and replaces them with the corresponding ANSI character so you dont see garbage in your message.
