Word 2.0 introduced revision marking to support online review and tracking of changes. Revision marking lets the document owner lock a file when distributing a document so revisions can be tracked. It uniquely identifies each reviewers revisions, and then lets the owner accept, reject, or merge revisions. Changes are displayed graphically, so other users know whats changed since the previous version. In Word 97, weve made further enhancements to our revision marking scheme, making it easier to read revised text. We have also added revision marking screentips - hovering over a revision tells you the date, time, and type of revision made. Specific enhancements include:
Old way: Tiom.
New way: Tim
Tom

New revision marks make it easier to read text changes and screentips show who changed what and when
