Word 97 comes with built in macro virus detection. This ensures against inadvertent macro viruses from documents received online or other unknown sources.

Macro Detection and Scanprot

When you open a document, Word automatically checks for macros and interface customizations. It alerts you if it finds programmatic extensions in the document and lets you disable them before opening the document. Word 97 also provides Scanprot, a tool for cleaning up existing documents.
