Posted May 13, 1996

Headers are printed in the margin area. The margin area is the blank area space along the perimeter of the page. Your margins may be set too close to the edge of the paper, therefore not allowing enough printable space. Word does not warn you if a header extends outside the printable area. If all or part of your header is missing, the problem may be that the margins in your document header need to be adjusted. To reposition your margins:

  1. From the menu bar, select View - Header and Footer
  2. A Header/Footer floating toolbar will then appear
  3. Click the Page Setup Icon
  4. Select the Margins tab
  5. Adjust the Header/Footer from Edge settings
  6. Click OK
  7. Click Close or press ALT+SHIFT+C

How can I insert the page number command as a basis for a header or footer?
Keywords: Insert Page Number Header Footer
Posted April 25, 1996

Headers and footers provide a polished look as well as organization when producing a document. The header area allows you to insert a document name, subject name, author, date, or the page number field. By inserting your page number in this area, the headers on all of your pages will be both consistent and automatic.

Follow this procedure only if the header and/or footer area is empty:

  1. Select View - Header and Footer
  2. An additional toolbar will appear showing the Header/Footer options. The header area will be prompted first. If would like to work on the footer area first, just click the Switch Between Header and Footer button.
  3. Select Insert - Page Numbers
  4. Select a Position (either header or footer) - Alignment (for the frame)
  5. Click Show Number on First Page
  6. Click the Format button
  7. Select your Number Format, Include Chapter Number , and Page Numbering option
  8. Click OK to close the Format Page Numbers Dialog
  9. Then click OK to close the Page Numbering dialog

If you previously had a header or footer, you now have 3 choices:

  1. Move it into the text frame
  2. Delete it
  3. Leave the existing header or footer text as is....now, try to find a place to drag the page number field - Good Luck - (you probably will experience a problem, such as the text exceeding the top or bottom margin.) The first two choices are much easier!
